May 17- Quito

After buying the SIM card yesterday and plodding through the Spanish instructions, it appeared to be working- but quit soon after.  It cost $1.99 so I figured it needed topping up and could find no way to do it on-line.  Went back to the store and the clerk didn’t understand me- tried to sell me a new one.  I told him “ya comprado” (I already bought it), a phrase we learned from our guide to fend off aggressive peddlers in Peru.  He nodded and said, “recargar”, a word I recognized.  He poked my number into the computer and $10 later I had data.  SO pleased I actually installed it correctly.

We went into the old city today- really beautiful architecture.  We visited the most famous church- the Jesuit church, wall-to-wall gold leaf, gaudy but beautiful. Photos were prohibited so here's a post card.

Courtyard of the Archbishop's Palace.  Ecuadorean roses are prized all over the world and were chosen for Harry and Meghan's wedding.

Ecuadorean President Dr. Gabriel Garcia Moreno
was assassinated on this balcony in 1875.
